Gary Roache

Gary is a high-performing, strategic and dedicated Associate Engineer at Axiom. As a qualified Civil Engineer, Gary has held many roles across several sectors and industries for the last 15 years, where he now combines his wealth of knowledge and skill in Project Management and Controls. He enjoys creatively solving problems, engaging people in unexpected ways and supporting efficient project processes. Outside of work he contributes to the social fabric of his community through local charities.

  • How did you end up in this career?

I graduated in 2007 as a Civil Engineer and have held many roles across sectors and industries. My key experience in Project Controls started in 2008 with a junior cost clerk role. I completely rebuilt the client cost model and found $10k of previously not invoiced costs.

This experience set me on a career path that involved working in the UK on the London underground to working for Queensland Health and clients from Weipa down to Hobart. Each project introduces different requirements, challenges, and diverse relationships; therefore, excellent communication is a crucial element of Project Controls.

  • Why Choose Axiom?

Axiom has a wealth of potential, with recognised global leaders supporting the growth and development of every team member. The culture within Axiom is to support each person through empathy and encouragement. We believe in identifying each person’s key strengths and then leveraging those outward to help that person achieve their career goals.

  • What would your advice be for those starting out?

Failure is the first step to success. True failure is when you give up, not when you are yet to achieve your goal.

Everyone wants you to succeed, so always ask for help from those around you and don’t be afraid to ask the dumb questions.

Ask yourself if something serves you, whether it’s a behaviour, a role or an emotional state. If something isn’t helping you get to the next step of your goals, then work on changing it.

Always remember that business is built on relationships. You can’t always have everyone like you, but you should put the connections ahead of delivery where possible.
