Paul O'Connor

Paul O’Connor

Director / Project Controls Manager 

Paul is a founding partner of Axiom and has over 30 years experience in project controls management, estimating, planning and cost engineering for major multi-disciplinary projects including materials handling, railways, minerals processing plants, underground and open cut mining, oil refineries, aluminium smelter, gas pipelines, alumina refineries, ethanol plants, power stations and industrial buildings.

He has led significant project assignments including: feasibility study planning for OZ Mineral’s Carrapateena underground gold/copper mine and infrastructure development, peer review of BHP Billiton/Mitsui’s South Walker Creek open cut sustaining capital developments, and various estimates for coal mine developments in Central Queensland. He was Project Controls Manager for Santos CO2 Removal and Utilities Expansion Project seconded to Uhde Shedden as EPCM contractor Paul spent three years in Mt Isa where he was the Project Controls Manager and Axiom’s project lead for their services agreement with Xstrata Zinc (now Glencore), providing planning and estimating for both the Lady Loretta greenfields mine development and the George Fisher Mine expansion project. His international experience includes Project Controls Manager for a Malaysia Iron Ore project, and Projects Controls Manager for the Guinea Alumina project feasibility and early works.

Doug Logan

Doug Logan

Director / Project Controls Manager

Doug is a founding partner of Axiom and has over 20 years experience in management, planning, estimating and cost control of large scale industrial and mining projects. His key skills are in the set-up, implementation and execution of effective project controls systems. This includes estimate / budget preparation, planning and scheduling, risk management and progress and cost reporting.

Most recently, Doug was Project Controls lead on the Eagle Downs Coal Project, and provided assistance with the drafting of South32’s new project controls framework. Other recent assignments include Lead Planner at the Adani Carmichael Project, Lead Planner (and subsequently Project Controls Manager) for the Wafi-Golpu pre-feasibility study in PNG where he undertook planning, estimating and cost control services. He was the Owner’s Planning and Cost Engineer for the Guinea Alumina Project for BHP Billiton in West Africa, and provided planning and cost engineering services at the Osborne Mine for Placer Dome, George Fisher Mine for Xstrata Zinc (now Glencore), the Mount Pleasant Coal Mine for Rio Tinto and the Sepon Copper/Gold Mine in Laos.

Doug holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical), University of Queensland, 1991; Bachelor of Business (Operations Management), University of Southern Queensland, 1997; and a Master of Project Management, Queensland University of Technology, 2009.

Rod Cochrane

Rod Cochrane

Director / Project Estimating Manager

Rod is a founding partner of Axiom and now leads Axiom’s estimating discipline. He has over 30 years experience providing project control services including cost control, planning and scheduling, and management support in Australia and internationally. Rod’s current focus is in the development of complex multi-disciplinary capital and operating cost estimates for major resource companies and engineering firms mostly in the mining and mineral processing, oil and gas, and major infrastructure industries. Rod is very experienced in developing and documenting estimates to suit the various stages of project investment and managing estimate inputs for complex studies involving Owner teams and multiple consultants. His experience also covers cost risk analysis, technical estimate reviews and life of mine estimates for Owner financial analysis.

Rod has been engaged as Owners Estimating Manager for numerous major studies including Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations expansion project feasibility study; Newcrest Mining’s Lihir gold mine, Papua New Guinea (PNG), pit optimisation and soft waste disposal studies’ Rio Tinto’s Oyu Tolgoi copper mine, Mongolia, Phase 2 underground mine development and plant expansion study; Morobe Mining JV’s Wafi-Golpu gold/copper mine, PNG, pre-feasibility study; Queensland Energy Resources’ oil shale demonstration plant; BG Group’s QCLNG coal seam gas project (upstream) whole-of-project concept study; and Guinea Alumina’s bauxite mine and alumina refinery, West Africa. Rod was also Project Controls Manager for Newcrest Mining’s Lihir gold mine Million Ounce Process Upgrade (MOPU) project. Recent hands-on estimating has included industrial site closures, materials handling systems, gas conditioning plants, gas storage plants, chemical storage and distribution, alternative fuels, remote site water infrastructure, tailings dams and other major civil works.

Phil Spry-Bailey

Phil Spry-Bailey

Director / Project Scheduling Manager

Also a founding partner of Axiom, Phil is an experienced project controls professional specialising in planning and scheduling. He has over 20 years industry experience gained in oil and gas, mining, minerals processing (copper, silver, lead, zinc, gold, alumina, coal) and infrastructure (roads, wharves, pipelines) construction projects. His project delivery experience covers Design and Construction, EPCM and Alliance methodologies representing both Owner’s and Contractor’s teams.

Most recently, Phil was engaged by Newcrest Mining as Project Controls lead for a pre-feasibility study at the Cadia Valley gold mine expansion; and earlier on the Lihir Gold Mine, pit optimisation study and soft mine waste disposal study where he also developed the project master schedules. He was Project Controls lead for the Gladstone New Fuels Development Project – Stage 2 for Queensland Energy Resources; and engaged in a project planning capacity to develop a revised master schedule baseline for the APLNG Upstream Gas Gathering Network for WDS Limited. Phil’s recent estimating experience includes QGC’s Phase II Tranche 1A & 1B Concept & Pre-FEED Engineering studies; and he provided estimating and scheduling services to Xstrata Zinc (now Glencore) at the George Fisher GF6 underground zinc mine expansion project.

Colin McDonald

Colin McDonald

Director / Project Manager

Colin has extensive experience in alumina refinery and metalliferous underground mining, mineral processing and smelting industry. He is highly skilled in project, engineering, operation and maintenance management, logistical analysis, organisational reviews and innovative problem solving.

Colin’s experience includes working as project manager for Gladstone Ports Corporation’s Stockpile 22 which comprised a EPCM of a new coal stockpile which included load-out facilities, reclaim tunnel, and bund wall and reclaimed land. He was manager engineering and maintenance services for Queensland Alumina Limited and earlier manager of maintenance services.

Colin holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from C.Q. University, 1985, and a Diploma in Business Administration, University of Queensland, 1992.

Jim Morison

Jim Morison

Director / Contracts & Procurement Manager

One of the founders of Axiom, Jim’s 20 years experience has been gained in delivery of engineering and construction projects in Australia, the Americas, South Pacific and South East Asia. He has worked for national and international EPCM contractors and owners on major infrastructure, mining, metals, and oil & gas projects. Jim’s specialty is the management of contracts and procurement functions, however his background in project controls qualifies him suitable for the role of Project Services Manager.

Examples of Jim’s experience includes recently providing contract and procurement services at the Stockyard Hill windfarm near Ballarat. He was engaged as part of the owner’s team providing contractual support for the management of the main Structural, Mechanical and Piping (SMP) contract, the cranes and logistics contracts at the Port Pirie Transformation Project. He was responsible for all contractual matters for the Bundaberg Port Gas Pipeline, and seconded to the APLNG West Gathering Project. He was responsible for the preparation of contracts procedures for the Wafi Golpu Project in PNG a number of years ago.

Arnaud Lavignolle

Arnaud Lavignolle

Senior Project Controls Engineer

Arnaud is a 10-year professional project controls engineer experienced in complex multi-disciplinary project developments. He has established planning and cost management systems and managed teams to deliver effective project controls on a number of significant mining and resource industry projects.

Arnaud’s project experience includes roles as a site project controls manager on a large coal mine in North Queensland, and project controls engineer on a multi-million dollar technology demonstration plant for a new shale oil extraction process with Queensland Energy Resources. He was 3 years with the Owner’s team on the Guinea Alumina Project, which was a multi-billion dollar project development of a 3.6 Mtpa greenfields bauxite mine and alumina refinery in remote Guinea, West Africa.

Arnaud is a Certified Cost Engineer (Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering international), 2012. He holds a Master of Industrial Engineering (Honours), École Centrale Paris, France, 2005, and is fluent in French, English and Spanish.

Giovanny Valdez

Senior Project Controls Engineer

Giovanny has over 10 years experience in planning and scheduling, cost control, contracts administration and project management gained in major multi-disciplinary capital works projects predominantly in the resource sector. He has worked with owner’s teams across all project phases from studies through execution to commissioning.

Currently, Giovanny is posted to Orange, NSW as Newcrest Mining’s Senior Project Controls Engineer for their Cadia Valley gold mine operations major capital works program. Prior to this, Giovanny completed assignments in PNG as Senior Planner Newcrest’s Lihir MOPU project, a complex major brownfields gold process plant upgrade. He was Cost Engineer for Morobe Mining JV’s Wafi Golpu gold mine early works. He also worked on Lihir MOPU project as an estimator/cost engineer.

Giovanny has a Master in Project Management from Instituto Europeo de Postgrado – Spain, 2013-2015; and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Universidad de las Americas – Puebla, 2004.

Claudio Olivieri

Project Controls Engineer

Claudio’s track record is in the mining, petrochemical, and energy resource industries. His 10 years plus experience includes project controls for multi-disciplinary capital work projects, in various roles including cost estimation, planning and scheduling, cost control, contract administration and procurement.

Claudio’s most recent experience was with Newcrest Mining’s Lihir gold mine expansion project and other capital works program where he provided full project controls services. Prior to this, he served as the Project Controls Engineer for Rio Tinto’s Gove sustaining capital works program; Auctus Resources Mungana process plant build; and for WDS/CPECC JV for the Arrow DomGas project. Claudio has also undertaken estimating roles such as Rio Tinto’s Mount Pleasant Coal Mine Pre-feasibility and Feasibility Studies; the Biomass to Biocrude FEED study, Queensland; Curtis LNG FEED study; and a combined estimator/project controls engineer for the Wafi-Golpu project in PNG.

Claudio has a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical), ITBA, 2007, and a Diploma of Project Management, Engineers Education Australia, 2016.

Andrew Martin

Andrew Martin

Project Controls Engineer

Andrew is an experienced project controls engineer who has approximately 10 years experience in estimating, cost control, and planning and scheduling roles. He is adept in the development, implementation, and maintenance of project control budgets, schedules, and associated systems. His assignments have ranged from feasibility studies in corporate offices to site-based project execution teams working alongside client representatives, other consultants and construction contractors.

Recent assignments include OZ Minerals’ Carrapateena copper project where he commenced as senior estimator during the feasibility study and then moved into a cost control role for the ECI and execution phases. He was also the project controls engineer for Xstrata Zinc (now Glencore), Lady Loretta mine near Mt Isa. Andrew’s estimating experience includes Newcrest Mining’s Lihir gold mine PNG, pit optimisation pre-feasibility study and the Lihir soft mine waste disposal project FEED study; Gold Road’s Gruyere gold project pre-feasibility study; Ixom’s Auckland Point Sulphuric Acid Facility in Gladstone and RioTinto’s Oyu Tolgoi OTFS14 Feasibility Study in Mongolia.
